Airbus and TELUS partner on Public Safety broadband communications for Canada

TELUS Business, headquartered in Canada, and Airbus Public Safety and Security have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop next-generation mission-critical communication infrastructure for the Canadian public safety sector. This joint initiative focuses on the transition toward advanced, mobile broadband communication systems to meet the specific technical requirements of Canadian emergency services and agencies.

Through this agreement, the two organisations will deliver standards-based solutions for mission-critical communications. The collaboration will promote an open ecosystem compliant with 3GPP standards, intended to provide Canadian agencies with enhanced interoperability and technical flexibility.

The partnership focuses on the integration of Agnet, Airbus’s broadband communication solution, with existing P25 networks and TELUS’ mobile infrastructure. TELUS provides the 3GPP-compliant mobile network and data infrastructure necessary to support secure communications and nationwide coverage for critical operations. This work is designed to allow public sector agencies to manage their own communication frameworks while utilising modern broadband capabilities.

As lead integrator, Airbus will manage the technical interfaces between P25 narrowband systems and next-generation broadband (MCX). These capabilities were demonstrated through Proof of Concept (PoC) projects in Ontario to evaluate the interoperability of these communication systems.

The alliance will support a "system of systems" architecture, which will allow individual provinces to manage their own interoperable communication networks while ensuring nationwide connectivity. By focusing on standardisation and technical autonomy, the partnership aims to provide a resilient framework for next-generation critical communications in Canada.
