Airbus Public Safety and Security’s TETRA communication network successfully supported security in Mexico City, which hosted one of the opening ceremonies and five matches of the FIFA World Cup from 11 June to 19 July 2026.
Ensuring order and tranquility during an event of this magnitude represented an inter-institutional coordination challenge. The efficient integration between public safety, emergency medical services, civil protection, local authorities, and traffic control was key to operational success.
The Airbus TETRA network, one of the largest mission-critical infrastructures in Latin America, once again demonstrated its reliability and resilience. Backed by its proven capabilities as part of large-scale events, such as the annual pilgrimage to the Basilica of Guadalupe which receives 13 million pilgrims over seven days, the TETRA technology facilitated communications and collaboration among public safety and emergency personnel.
Thanks to the Airbus platform, coverage was ensured both inside and around the stadium, the 19 fan zones, and every strategic point in Mexico City throughout the 39 days of the tournament.
In detail, the main stadium welcomed more than 400,000 fans across five matches, with an average attendance of 80,000 spectators per game. 19 official fan zones were also set up in the capital, bringing together more than 7 million attendees over 39 days, with 2.5 million people concentrated in the main area of Mexico City's Zócalo alone.
The performances of the national team, with victories in its first three group stage matches and in the opening matches of the knockout rounds, sparked celebrations as always at the Angel of Independence monument on the Paseo de la Reforma avenue. The public's enthusiasm was reflected in significant attendance figures in the city center:
- First match: 420,000 people.
- Second match: 730,000 attendees.
- Third match: More than 800,000 people.
- Fourth match (qualifiers): a record of 1.4 million attendees, reaching up to 1.8 million people celebrating in the surrounding areas and the city center.
